Christmas Gifts in a Jar

Perhaps this Christmas you could give homemade delicacies that smell wonderful and are packaged in beautiful jars?

Gifts in a jar are easy, quick and inexpensive to make. Layer in all the dry ingredients, decorate and attach the recipe. Try the chocolate spice cake or nutty bread. You could also try a spice mix for mulled wine or berry juice.

Ingredients

Bread in a Jar

225ml rye flour

200ml white flour

200ml porridge oats

100ml ground nuts

1/2 tsp salt

100ml brown sugar

1 ½ tbsp baking powder

400g Turkish-style yoghurt (10% fat)

100ml milk

 

Chocolate Spice Cake

300ml buttermilk

150ml sugar

500ml white flour

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp cinnamon

2 tsp vanilla sugar

1 tsp clove

2 tsp cardamom

100ml melted butter or margarine

150g dark chocolate

 

Mulled Wine Spice Mix

4 tbsp brown sugar

1 tbsp cloves

a few star anise

2 cinnamon sticks

a few slightly dried orange slices

 

Instructions

Bread in a Jar

Mix the dry ingredients and add the yoghurt and milk while stirring quickly. Bake in a greased tin at 175°C for approx 40 minutes.

 

Chocolate Spice Cake

Mix the dry ingredients. Mix the buttermilk and sugar. Add the dry ingredients and chopped chocolate. Add the melted butter or margarine. Pour the batter into a buttered and floured spring form cake tin. Bake at 175°C for approx 1 hour, test with a wooden skewer before taking out.
